Getting Your Name Out There: Networking

This week we’re continuing our series on “Getting Your Name Out There.” Today’s focus: networking.

If you’re like most people, you see networking as a necessary evil of sorts. Or you see it as just plain evil. You hate dragging yourself out to meet strangers, especially if there’s no guarantee of a sale or business in return.

So let’s flip this idea on its head for a minute. Have you ever considered going into a networking event and thinking about what you can GIVE versus GET in return?

This model is what the famous BNI (Business Networking International) groups operate under. If you’re able to offer help to other people in the room by referring a business you’ve used before, then that person will feel indebted to you and attempt to return the favor or do business with you.

Now, in a closed circle, or one where you know the majority of people who will be in attendance, this model works great.

Most networking events are NOT like that, though. It’s a crap shoot as to who will be there. So, how do you get people to remember you and want to do business with you?

Two words: BUSINESS CARDS.

To stand-out in a crowd, a great business card can take you so far! Dellanee and I have gotten multiple calls and opened doors just based on our business cards. We opted to pay slightly more for our cards so they’d have a great texture and iridescent finish. Both are great conversation starters when meeting someone new. Additionally, it lends credibility to our claim to creativity.

Now along with a good biz card, you’ve got to be sure you are open and receptive to meeting people. If you’re not feeling well, don’t force it. Attend the event when you’re in the right head-space. (And for the love of all that’s good and holy, if you’ve got a cold or some kind of germ, GO HOME! Do not shake hands with folks if you’ve got a runny nose. You don’t want to be remembered for being THAT person…)

OK. You’re feeling good. You’ve got great cards. Now where do you go? Fortunately there are a TON of great networking events locally. The Young Professionals Initiative of the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce hosts an event every month. BNI groups meet all over town at all different times. You can find their events on the BNI website. The Bossier Chamber hosts events every month, as does the Shreveport Bossier African American Chamber of Commerce. Various industry-specific groups host events as well. Dellanee and I attend the Ad Fed ones, and I also attend PRAL luncheons and AFP events. We’re both committing to attending more networking events this year, so if you see us out and about be sure to say hi!

Most importantly, remember the acronym ABN: ALWAYS BE NETWORKING! You never know when a casual contact will turn into a referral or a client. Keep business cards with you at all times and don’t be afraid to spread them around liberally!
