Spice Girl Inspiration
When I drive around town, I mostly have my radio set to Bluetooth, and it just starts playing a random sample from my Apple Music library. The other day a blast from the past came on: “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls. It quickly brought to mind the very famous phrase the British pop group used to shout, “Girl Power!”
I think every millenial girl remembers that phrase. I was a huge fan when I was younger. All of my friends claimed which “spice” they were. I was Sporty most of the time but would sometimes identify with Ginger, having red hair and all.
After the song came on, I began thinking about what modern day Girl Power is to me. Frankly, it’s not just about the typical feminist ideals: equal pay, the right to make our own choices about our bodies, and shattering the glass ceiling. To me, modern day Girl Power is about uplifting and supporting all of the women around us.
With the major strides made in the past decade, we don’t have to constantly compete with one another for everything. Not for a man. Not for a promotion. Not for anything! When we begin to see each other’s successes as our own, we can truly make a great impact together for our communities and the world. Another woman’s success isn’t a personal slight against me. It’s her success. Her success is a tribute to the forward mobility of all women in society.
In closing, ladies, if you “Wannabe” a great female role model, just “Say You’ll Be There” for all of the other “Mama”’s out there. (WOW, was that cheesy enough for you guys? LOL!)
